Hi!

I have succesfully succeeded in playing MP3's on an old Gateway 386 that I
just picked up! Here's how I did it (these steps are slow if you don't have
a LAN, so I'll describe both methods):

Without a LAN:

* Download "UltraPlayer" for Windows at MP3.COM
* Download your favorite MP3 File
* Launch UltraPlayer and open the MP3--Don't panic if it doesn't play, it
isn't at this point! It will appear in your "Playlist."
* Right-Click on the song, and click "Save as WAV File" (this is where a
good hard drive comes in! It will take up approx. 40.1MB of SPACE!)
* The process will begin--if you have a LAN with a fast server, it is
better to download and launch UltraPlayer's WAV file conversion on this
computer and play it on the 386! Why? It will take a WHOLE DAY to
complete on a 386 stand-alone! (but it will be well worth your while to
actually play it on the 386 later!)
* After the conversion is complete, CLOSE UltraPlayer, and launch "Media
Player." Play the FILE!! YAY! But it might cut out for a nanosecond
every minute, but hey! Your playing an MP3 on a 386!

With a LAN (Peer to Peer):

* Download and begin the above steps on converting the file on the
SERVER.
* Launch "Windows Explorer" on the 386 Client.
* Copy the WAV file from the Server to the 386 Client.
* Run "Media Player" on the 386 Client. Play the file!

This works depending on the amount of RAM you have, the CLOCK SPEED of the
processor, and other circumstances, but it worked for me! You can also try
this on 486's as well, without the "skip" problem! But anyone who has a 386
is welcome to try it out!

Decompressing the MP3 file to WAV before playing..
Isnt that "cheating"? :)

at that level of survpc you gotta cheat!
anyway, if someone really only had a 386, they could now listen if it was
very important

There's also these for DOS:

SetEdit (an editor with built in MP3 player), OpenCP

IIRC these are some of the addreses:
DOSAMP: http://www.nullsoft.com/dosamp.zip
DAMP: http://www.damp-mp3.co.uk/
OpenCP: http://www.cubic.org/ (new version out not that long ago - 2.60pre4)

However since WinPlay was made by the people that more or less invented
MP3s I really think it's the fastest one. I still can't understand why some
of you needed to lower the quality when using it.

Another important thing I remember is that you should try and get files
with 112 as bitrate instead of 128 (112 is the default IIRC from L3Enc
until you register - made by the same people). There was a noticably
ability in running other programs (mostly Netscape 3.x) at the same time as
I played MP3s. However I never experienced any problems (although I only
had files up to 192 at the time) if all the computer was doing was playing
a MP3. A friend suggested that it might be the cache that differs - I had
128KB on mine, and I remember my SX-25 with that ammount was much faster
when playing games then a friends (8KB IIRC).

Yes it is, especially when using a Windows program to do it. I suggest you
use L3dec instead if this is what you want to do.
