I also have noticed a growing number of web sites that are inaccessible to
Arachne...not only
Arachne, but even some of the latest "developer" versions of Lynx DOS ports for 386
up! I
have not even been able to login to my own email group using DOS, since Yahoo bought
out
eGroups, and have instilled JavaScript and HTTPS SSL...not even with a version of Lynx
compiled with SSL enabled. This is what I've been sort of complaining about at
Arachne Chat
for the past year or so...it's not so much as someone holding a gun or club to my head
telling
me I must use this certain OS and application software as it is the much more devious
plot of
getting all the folks who provide services on the Internet to do so using ONLY those
protocols
that came from a certain BIG corporation! Yes, I know, there is a "workararound" for
Arachne
in which you open the page in Arachne editor, edit out the https to be only http, save
and view,
but, this doesn't always work...you have to remember to clear your "cookie" file!
What we
really need is a grassroots rebellion by those of US who use the Internet daily to
gird up our
loins and "Just Say NO" to borrow a phrase to all of those who are CRAMMING all this
unnecessary "fluff" down our throats! I guarantee you, inside of 2 years, if WE don't
do
something SOON, it will be too late, and we will find that our perfectly usable 386,
486, Pentium
1,2 and 3s will be LOCKED OUT of the Internet! Yep, I'll still have mine around to
play a few of
the old games on, maybe keep by checkbook balance, and write simple letters, but it
will all
be for local only use...if I want to keep my Internet, I'm being forced to "upgrade"
to some
machine and operating system I DO NO WANT!

Oh, jeez, I did it again. Sorry about that rant, but ya know, I've been playing with
these
gadgets for a very long time...longer than I care to mention! We stand now at a
crossroads to
the future...are we going to be as sheep and let ONE COMPANY literally DICTATE how,
when,
why, where and with what we access the Internet and World Wide Web? I decided a couple
of years ago to quit playing the game of continuous system upgrades, software upgrades,
only to find I still couldn't do something so simple as web based email! I also
decided not to
jump and purchase the newest gadgets to come outta the pipes. Yes, I sometimes use MS
operating systems and software, BUT...I also use others, especially a lot of other
FREEWARE and open source applications! The bottom line is it is MY CHOICE...not
Bill's,
Steve's, the other Steve's, nor even Larry's, but MINE! I choose what OS and apps I
WANT to
install and use on the products I PURCHASED! I for one wish to keep it that way and
give
everyone the same opportunities as I've enjoyed for the past umpteen years!

As for what else we can do, I'm not sure. I contemplated a letter to my congressmen
and
senators, but with the current paranoia in our government, I fear that letters from the
constituency are being ignored, besides, I usually don't include such gratuties as
cash,
checks or other bribes, hehe! Still, I may grab a good old-fashioned pen and paper
and jot
down a few lines of half-literate comments!
