Hi Gang!
I didn't mean to stop the discussion of how to find files on your disk, I
just
hate to see the talk sink to the level of "My OS is better than yours 'cause
I can do XYZ and you can only ABC"...You can do similar routines in DOS,
using IF EXIST and IF NOT EXIST, variations can be done to search the entire
path, or even in sub-directories. The problem for DOS anyhow, is the
availability of really small, easy-to-use utilities which do all
of this for you, you just supply a few command-line options to customize
your search. One that comes to mind, and highly recommend it, is
LOCATE...you can even delete files from the listed ones found, even "zero
byte" files. This is one of the handiest little utilities I've used. So,
bearing that in mind, the question then becomes "Do we need to re-invent the
wheel, when we already have high quality tools?".
BASH scripts and DOS BATCH have many things in common, but I do
concede that BASH is more powerful...it has to be! The OS it is for is
a lot mroe powerful than DOS. But, if you can make your system perform
as you need it using DOS, or even Windows 3X, or if needed, go with Win9X or
Linux or other OS, do so. Just don't expect the rest of the world to change
their OS because your particular likes have changed.

Note: I wrote this running Windows 95 OSR1, aka Win95 A, on a 486DX4 100
mHz Intel CPU powered user built PC, with 24 meg RAM, running also MS IE
5.01 (the "Levi Jeans" version, hehe), even broke down and used Outlook
Express 5 (aka LookOut Extreme) So, even an
old slow 486 CAN run some MS operating systems, LOL! <{;-)
