Even on compressed files like the above mentioned there was some gain
from the wasted space that is lost  in any file that is not an exact
multiple of the allocation unit size. With all of the files in a
single concatenated file, it could account for a significant savings.

True, but when you "shuck right down to the cob", isn't every storage
medium (except for carved granite) really a "time bomb" if you use it
long enough? Tick, tick...
