Unix-derived systems don't have as much an issue as the features only
crudely approximated by append and join are how things are done natively.
Adding space to a filesystem just requires a mountpoint to "plug in" the new
drive into the existing tree. If space is an issue, some creative use of
symlinks can point a particularly full directory (or some subset of it) to
an entirely new area on disk.

Beyond that, drive arrays and volume management (see
http://www.gweep.net/~sfoskett/linux/lvmlinux.html) offer far more
sophisticated capabilities.
