I mean one that installed ok, ran for some time,
then crashed or whatever, and when cold booted
again would not boot the os. I remember one that
told me to run xfsck or some such, and all that
did was give me a longer list of error messages.

For most Newbies, with a single drive on a single
system, this is the end of the line. They cannot
get online to get help, and the manuals which I
have seen dont mention the problem.

To say you should have used a 'rescue' disk isnt
always useful either. I have seen distros that
went all the way thru the install, and then when
it got a floppy error, crashed, and wiped out the
entire install. So I learned to always try to be
sure I had a _perfect_ floppy in the drive before
beginning an install.

I have also seen 'rescue' disks that didnt, but
told me the drive was unreadable and had errors. duh.
