There are two ways around this problem:
(1) If you have a reasonably up-to-date computer, you can use
a recent distribution that auto-detects and auto-configures X.
(2) If you have a survPC, you can use the generic VGA config,
which should work on almost anything. It's only 640x480,
16 colors, but it's a good way to get X running quickly and
(relatively) painlessly.
The only reason I didn't put a default VGA configuration in
BasicLinux was because I couldn't get Netscape to run properly
in VGA. Now, that I have found the "magic word" to make
Netscape run in VGA, I'm modifying the HD version of BasicLinux
for easy VGA installation.
Cheers,
Steven
