Dear folks, Based on one of the other recent messages to the SurvPC forum, I just wanted to bring to the discussion that I think that older Macintoshes can make pretty good SurvPCs, as well (in the broader sense of Personal Computer).
I currently have a Mac IIci [20MB RAM, 80MB HD, OS 7.1], which I use for a variety of tasks - including one of the databases of books that I keep. FileMaker Pro is one of the lightest-weight, most feature packed databases I have seen, and it does the job very well. My experience with Macintosh hardware is that it tends to be fairly rugged - working for a long, long time without any need to crack open the case. Except perhaps for the floppy drive... All but the oldest Macintoshes can be upgraded to Mac OS 7.x, and much of the Mac software will run on OS7 through OS9. Software written for the new OSX won't, but that's still a small chunk. And you can run Linux on the Macintoshes, too. There's at least two distributions that I'm aware of. :-) So, if you happen to come across an older Macintosh looking for a home, give it a try, you might be pleasantly surprised by what it can do.
