My experience with several (Hayes, Zoom, and 1 or 2 I can't remember)
external modems and all of them used 9 volts AC. Often other
electronic devices which use the "wall warts" for power will have
some sort of polarity markings if they require DC input. There is no
guarantee, but I have found this to be the case most of the time. HTH.
