In order to install and configure software using linux it is often necessary
to run as root. In the case of manufacturer's software updates, it may be
necessary to even do that on line but that I'm not completely certain of
since I've not got rhns-setup and up2date goin over here yet. I try not to
actually install software when on line though so that I get a little
protection. The other thing is, I have firewall security at high level but
understand firewall piercing is possible given a howto is available on that
subject in the linux howto archives. For redhat that security level means
nothing is listening and I've read a suggestion on having xinetd run
sendmail I'll probably try out if it's not already implemented. Last year
some script kitty incorrectly installed linsniffer on my linux system,
unfortunately for them all partitions got wiped and all were reformatted
when I reinstalled the system. There wasn't enough valuable on the system
to have even been worth their time or effort but I understand we have lots
of Chinese spies in our area and they might have been looking to harvest a
work-related password. Unfortunately, work is at work and home is at home
and they don't even meet with passwords since I don't log onto work
computers from home.
