if it cant 'find command.com', then the software is still running, but looking for it. It may possibly have been placed in DRAM, but given the 386 vintage, there may be so little available that it needs the original copy off the drive... and cant find it?
try booting off a floppy every time you use the system. seems like drdos 7 can create a vdisk and park a copy of it at d:\command.com ... and run just fine... and if it indeed has a hard drive problem, then it'll prolly tell you it cant find something else soon enuf. Tried running with the case open to see if anything seems kinda hot? Does it pass the sniff test? most likely time to get a new hard drive.
