I recently had to study Rockwell's modem commands, and discovered that
adding

        \V1 (i.e. backslash, V, ONE)

to my init string resulted in a very informative response upon a
connect. Like this:

        CONNECT 115200/V90/LAPM/V42BIS/31200:TX/48000:RX

Now I use it all the time. I like to see what's going on. But as for the
other chip manufacturers, I'm sorry, I don't know.
