Hi Heimo,
Hi Howard S.,
Hi TechW0rm,
Hi to you all,
About "LSPPP Blues" of May 12:
HS> ...internet applications seem to perform badly compared to epppd...
HS> I have no problem loading EPPPD high, even though it is bigger...
HS> Am I odd person out for continually noticing problems with LSPPP,
HS> where others see an improvement?
HC> My own holehearted praise for LSppp comes from the experience...
HC> I don't like the fact that the command line options (lsppp /?) look
HC> so strange (like they've not even been checked)...
I load `LSPPP v0.764' high on a daily basis and what i read made me
recall the previous version when `EPPPD' was more stable. I too noticed
the problem about the `LSPPP' help screen where an ~ASCII~ #09 character
is seen while i'd expect a Line-Feed but the rest worked fine until now.
I'd suggest you try it with a minimum of ~TSRs~ and drivers loaded;
find out if that's an incompatibility problem, or did you check already?
HS> ...data will build up in RAM over time and not get purged.
I read this comment about `EPPPD' myself and i believe it came from
Heimo. I wish i could measure such memory leaks myself, can you assist?
HC> Why not write to the autor and mail hin the precise diagnosis? My
HC> experience was that he responded very eagerly...
TC> I've not heard from David Lindauer for quite some time...
We can be worried, it wouldn't be the 1st DOS author and/or source-
code to be lost forever and without any of these around the incentive to
report bugs becomes trivial, not to mention the drive to "contribute"...
I regret that i didn't hear about v0.764 before, when David Lindauer was
still possibly available. This new executable got to me almost by luck,
which isn't a big surprize considering that people who just want to READ
our mail-list are required to subscribe in order to obtain a password!!!
HS> Is there another ``old'' packet driver that does not have EPPPD's
HS> problem I can use?
There are a few i can think of but i got no means to measure such a
thing as memory leaks. Well, perhaps this would be revealed with simple
"mem" commands? I never tried to compare the results since i simply did
not need to. You appear to use a Class-1/~EtherNet~ `WatTCP'-compatible
version of `Pine v3.91'; since it also exists in the DOS ~ODI~ flavour,
the Novell/Caldera `DR_Web-Spyder' demo-diskette which uses some NetWare
Novell Client components should suit this one nicely. Perhaps filenames
as `LSL.COM', `NCOMx.COM', `NWRemot.COM', `Dialer.EXE' and `Pkt2ODI.EXE'
would ring a bell? This minimalistic Novell NetWare Client subset comes
with the `Web-Spyder' graphic ~WEB~ browser (from Digital Research, if i
am not mistaking). This is a BETA version but the Novell drivers appear
to be the genuine stuff. I think Lineo now owns Caldera which owned the
Novell company which owned the Digital Research company... I was forced
to revise my links to the demo-diskette archive often over the years and
the last check which i made on December 23 2001 was no longer valid when
i began to write this reply. If you got any interrest about this, there
is an old NewsGroup article which i wrote on January 2000 and that would
give you a detailed explanation on how i used this stack exactly. Since
the archive has a tendency to vanish from the InterNet and it's too easy
to overlook typos, i revised the "DR_WEB-Spyder" link on the 1st part of
my home page (i often place such links on my ~WEB~ site), euh... You'll
simply need to follow that link, the archive can be have from there. It
must be possible to use the demo-diskette contents as-is to load its DOS
~ODI~/packet-driver stack but you can take a look at my .BAT & `Net.CFG'
files to have a better idea of how it works. `Klos' worked too but that
one could only be have after users contacted them via ~E-Mail~ and their
ShareWare version didn't support ~PAP~/~CHAP~ automated LogIn protocols;
the Demo version did but with some 15 minutes limit! I vaguely remember
that there has been an old version of `Klos' around which wasn't cripled
but you'll have a hard time finding it, if that one exists at all! `LAN
WorkPlace for DOS v4.2' might be hard to locate as well (i'd suggest you
try a search for "SLIP_PPP.CO") but don't expect ~PAP~/~CHAP~ support in
there at all because i don't think you'll find any, as i seem to recall.
Hummm... But sometimes i feel as if i were simply repeating my own
stuff and, well, perhaps it's a good time to reintroduce myself a bit!!!
******************[ "I wish to introduce myself...", January 22, 2002 ]*
...My hobby is about LEGACY DOS InterNet/BBSing; i used ~TelNet~ a lot,
on a `Tandy-1000' PC or a GridCase (8088), then a Carry-I (80286), etc.,
etc. ...i was given a free INet ~PPP~ account, around 1995. ...i found
`EtherPPP', `Klos', `LAN WorkPlace for DOS' and then `DOSPPPD'...

;->
The three late episodes of silence i noticed since January happened
to coincide with failures in the mail-list distribution from SoftCon and
each time i didn't see much while i anticipated an opposite development.
The last time i saw replies about a troublesome ~URL~ and then the buggy
`NetMail for DOS v2.12' software, then the mail-list was quiet a bit and
there was a message from TechW0rm and now an other... I appologize if i
seemed to be ignoring someone in my turn but i can loose ~E-Mail~, etc.,
and it's too much trouble to search for what's missing using the SoftCon
~WEB~ site. Really, BBSes/`FdN' are more foregiving in comparison! %-o
So, TechW0rm... Please let me know at least what you think of user
"contributions" - especially when that was matured over many years? 8^o
Heimo strongly suggested that i "contribute" and i did express my desire
to do just that; i tried to let know about it many times, actually! :(
Anyway, i'd like to inform my correspondants that i didn't get that
correct ~URL~, from Heimo as i recall; that `NM' did it again, and that
it seems "contributions" to `LSPPP' aren't welcome judging from a number
of past/failed attempts which remained unanswered. :( It would be nice
if i could manage with the `SurvPC' mail-list the way i can deal with my
`FdN_DOS-INet' correspondance, i.e. via a .QWK Off-Line mail door: this
would let me verify that something new has been posted in this mail-list
if SoftCon goes down, but echo-mail and mail-list are different animals.
I read a post from the SysOp of the NetCava BBS who announced that mail-
lists can possibility be received from his system; the message wouldn't
tell if that can be done through .QWK message-packets but i suppose that
the mail won't be transfered when there's a failure at SoftCon anyway...
Too bad. I tried an alternative source for the `RIME_DOS' mail-list and
all i achieved is receiving the same content twice or nothing if SoftCon
has a problem, like some incidents when the trouble came from its ~ISP~.
Again, i'll present myself to make certain it doesn't slip through.
I'm a simple USER with some limited programming skills who's trying
to explore the other side of the BBSing equation (i.e. SysOp vs User)...
SysOps have a voice, users need one too. I don't pretend to be anyone's
guru but mine, those i seek are users who don't depend on anything but a
plain old DOS system to ~TelNet~ their favorite BBSes. I want to use my
time in promoting BBSing MY OWN WAY, which is to make this available for
DOS LEGACY users - the `Windows' and `Linux' people should ignore me and
deal with the rest as i read that i must upgrade too many times already!
I'd like to cooperate with SysOps WHO CAN HANDLE THEIR OWN SoftWare
and who'd appreciate having the `Kermit' file transfer protocol added...
I have no ready-made solution to offer but i can make sound suggestions;
my intent is to develop that solution together and to share it with more
SysOps when done. `Kermit' is a viable alternative where `ZMoDem' fails
but i also welcome those who can help explaining why `ZMoDem' in `Conex'
and other similar DOS terminal emulators (except `IVT DOS v11.3e') poses
a problem. Long ago i shown that 286+ PCs are "OverKill" for BBSers who
want to use a ~TelNettable~ BBS for their Off-Line messaging, i'm making
it as clear as possible what sort of game i can play and i hope now that
the others know they don't have to play this game alone: i.e. DOS INet.
Salutations, :)
