At the time I didn't have IE either, hehe...although I do have it now, for Win95, I use
IE 5.01 SP2...way back when I was stuck using AOHell's browser that they had
prior to the license deal with MS...NetScape for some odd reason, thru 3 installs
of 3 versions, would delete some of the DLL files needed, especially by AOHell
software. I currently use Opera 3.62 on my Win3X machines, but spend more time
in plain old DOS, using Arachne 1.62, 1.66 and Lynx 386 2.84, as well as WizLynx.
Some of the other comments weren't made by me...but, I have a couple of great
books for Win95. when I did decide to install it, I wanted to have as much information
as possible about it. In one of those, Tips and Tricks I think, it told me that Win95
will still cache disk activity in DOS box, because Windows maintains control over
the hardware, regardless what is running, a DOS or Windows app. When I use this
486DX4 in plain dos, either 6.22 or 7.0, I load SmartDrive...the EMM386.EXE settings
that someone else mentioned refer to Windows needing 2 places in UMB to start
apps from. For this I have an "i=B000-B7ff" statement, then "WIN=b400-b4ff" and
WIN=b700-b7ff to set those two mappings permanently for Windows use. As for the
"vcache" still caching and how do I know, I just do...it is very similar to long file
names...
if you use a DOS box in win9X, your output to screen of a "DIR" command will be in
the standard 8.3 convention alongside a display of the long file name...because
Windows has loaded the VXD (virtual device drivers) to provide access to the VFAT.
Windows also keeps the VXD for the disk cache loaded. These are "virtual" drivers,
not like DOS TSRs or Win3X drivers which you can see easily in memory. This is a
simplified explanation, but it should get the general idea across!
