Hi Listers,
Just wanted to drop a note to let everyone know I have uploaded a
new ZIP archive to the public site at ftp.tmonroe.com...previously
I found a file there, SLYNX.ZIP, which turned out to be a DOS version
of Lynx 386 version 2.8.4rel.1, compiled with S Lang instead of the
more common PD Curses, such as the one at my DOS Internet site and
the newer ones from Doug Kauffman. The only problem was the ZIP
at tmonroe only contained the SLYNX.EXE and a README text file...
no configuration tips/files or help files were included, nor any
of the other needed tools to get LYNX to browse the web. I had
already installed various versions of Lynx 386 on my computers, so,
I took the necessary files, including a sample BATCH program or 2,
put them all in a ZIP archive, and have it ready for release to the
unsuspecting public, errr, to the Lynx DOS users! Read the file
SLYNX.TXT, unzip SLYNX386.ZIP with the "-d" option to create the
directory tree, then edit LYNX.BAT, LYNX.CFG to reflect your very
own settings, then dial and connect to your ISP. Launch the SLynx
browser with the command LYNX and press ENTER, or you can optionally
supply the URL of a web page, ie LYNX http://www.slashdot.org ENTER.
If you already have a Lynx 386 DOS installed, you can use either your
current LYNX.EXE or by substituting SLYNX.EXE for LYNX.EXE, use it
also. SLynx has minor differences in the way it highlights and displays
specialized texts, such as italics, bold, etc. It will display with
bright text and bright highlights, making it very useful for those who
use older notebooks or monochrome monitors which don't have sharp
delineation for these special texts in PD Curses Lynx. Color is also
somewhat supported. The executable SLYNX.EXE is also smaller by some
250kb or so than the correlating PD Curses compilation. That might be
handy for someone running low on HD space. SLynx was compiled by
Randy Goldenberg, the ZIP archive and SLYNX.TXT were arranged by me...
