Thomas, if I read this correctly, you're looking for a light instant
messaging (IM) client that will let you talk to Yahoo! Messenger from
Linux, correct? You might want to check out some of the console-based
Jabber clients for Linux -- imcom and pJab. The beauty of Jabber is
that the SERVER can be configured to use "transports" which will let
you converse with other IM systems from the same client. For example, I
log into a Jabber server using an X-based client (GAIM) and from there
can converse with users of AIM and ICQ all through that same client. I
find this a very "friendly" approach for those of us that don't want to
load our systems up with more software than necessary.

You'll need to find a Jabber server (there are several) that provides
the yahoo transport, and you'll also need a working Yahoo! account
(which your brother could create for you).

There are also console-based IM clients specifically for Yahoo! and
others. ari-yahoo, gnuyahoo are listed.

I've only tinkered with a couple of the console-based clients, but they
do work.

If you're running X, there are many other choices available, many of
which are quite small or may be part of various distributions.

A good list of Jabber clients and related software can be found at
www.jabbercentral.com. Let me know if you want more details.
