I've been watching both speech-recoginition and simple text-to-speech
develop over the two decades plus that I have been interested in computers.

It seems most overlook the fact that a good deal of our `speech' involves
colloquialisms and eupherisms with dialect thrown in even within various
regions of the USA. Johny Carson (TV late night talk show host) said he
was hired, in part, because he had no regional dialect. His speech patterns
are referred to as mid-western American dialect. TV news persons practice
speaking in this fashion.

>From the North to the South (US) people complain about the speed at which
Northerners speak. What speed will be used? Nothern or Southern?

I guess my question(s) would be, OK speech but which version and what
language? My first text-to-speech hardware had a Swedish accent that
amused my children but was extremely obvious even when using phenomes
in place of the original text to attempt corrections of pronunciation.

My wild-eyed guess is that futher research will combine plant life with what
we now think of as computers. We will have talking plants. Since trees
can live for hundreds of years we could have a tree-like plant that could
remember conversations with our great grandparents and would have the
advantage of a wide perspective of change/history to use to advise us
in our daily lives.

I know, sounds extreme but we are discussing talking rocks here right now
(in reality silicon-based talking rocks). LOL
