That works.  It will dial the number and ring the phone, provided
you have a real modem on COM1.  If you use DOS's ECHO that way to
dial your ISP it will contact the phone line at your ISP, but you
will not be presented with a terminal screen for entering your login
and password.  If you want to get a terminal screen you should use
COMTOOL or MINITERM or some other DOS program designed for this
purpose.  Before dialing with DOS's ECHO command it is a good idea to
reset your modem as in:

echo AT&F > COM1
