The CMOS battery may be the problem, or it could be something weirder.

You might try turning off AUTO sensing of the disk geometry (in C/H/S,
see my previous post) if you have it turned on.  I have occasionally
seen this cause problems.  The drives should work if you enter the
C/H/S values into the CMOS directly, using the "User-Defined" or "Type
47" option in your CMOS setup.
