That could be as a result of some internal re-configuration.
What size does FDISK return? (Be careful!)  Or CHKDSK?  Or DIR?

Try slowing the system down.  If the CPU is going faster than some
of your cache or RAM can handle, a weak, or slow bit can cause the
system to hang.  I have a system that works fine as long as I slow
down (or disable) the external cache.  One of the cache chips is
different from the others.  Maybe someday, I'll find the right chip to
replace it properly, but for now, I'll leave things as they are.
