Often the only 'motivation' for writing free software is the existence
of free source code to modify rather than start with a blank page. There
were few alternate 'DOS' until source for DRDOS and FreeDOS was made
available - now there is an endless stream of dos-wannabe's and embedded
DOS etc.

I've always used Gazelle Systems QDII and QDIII. They went out of business,
then returned with a new owner but I've not checked on the new company
for a year or more now.

Desk2 is quite useable if you want mouseable. The newer SEAL is very good
looking but a resource hog. Volkov Commander is mentioned often and is
quite small/fast and useful.
