There are no 'regular OS', each has/had it's uses.

DOS has access to ALL of the hardware.  There is no way to stop
DOS from doing telecom other than to just not write/compile the
code.  Eventually someone always does, out of boredom or curiousity
but it gets done just the same. :-)

PTSDOS is the 'official' OS for the Russian Ministry of Defense
according to their website, and was used in one of their space
stations.  I would guess the ministry wants Internet access?

Embedded DOS has continued to be developed and FreeDOS is gaining
momentum now that Linux users want to have 'dosemu' available.

Everything will end eventually.  Computers didn't always exist.
Maybe the computer will be replaced one day as was the mechanical
calculator, slide rule, and other devices.  At that point the
existence of DOS, Linux, Windows will be irrelevant. ;-)
