It's all very fuzzy in my memory now, but I think the NEC V chips
introduced the first of the "equivalence" ratings that are so common
now. I stuck a V30 in my Olivetti M24, replacing the 8MHz 8086. So far
as I know, without changing the actual timing on the motherboard, the
chip still ran at an identical 8MHz clock rate. Yet there was a MARKED
improvement in performance. I played the sub game GATO quite a bit at
the time. My friend with a stock IBM XT used to joke that my sub was
waterskiing, and the game moved at a much faster pace. Everything else
seemed a bit snappier, and it was a nice machine to work on (the green
display was stunning) for many years, particularly with DesqView.
