Ben: with two recently, completely fresh installed systems on my
machine (exchangeable HDs) where the Zip is an internal SCSI drive,
I found the filesystem type "vfat" for it automatically inscribed
into the pertinent line in fstab.

This then would _not_ read the "msdos" (FAT16) formatted Zip diskettes.
it just wouldn't list any file there, zero.

I had to edit this fstab line, putting _myself_ "msdos" as filetype in
there, and reboot.

Same story with a CF (compact flash card) _adapter_ (not a PCMCIA
connector) which is connected as the second HD to the motherboard.
Again, it was not _me_ who had put in "vfat" in its "fstab" line;
I had to edit this too in order to have it read CF cards correctly.

Thus I think I have reason to say that one should watch out for it to
have _these_ (Zipdrive and CF adapter) mounted precisely as "msdos", not
at "vfat".
And IIRR we had that same problem with a "backpack"/parport connected
Zipdrive at a workshop and with Slackware.- Maybe it reads all sorts
of floppies Ok. but wth the Zip drives and diskettes it seems to be
specific.
