Hi Alejandro,
Hi Samuel,
About "New menu dialer for DOS" of January 19:
AL> This program runs in any 80286/80386 with a VGA color display.
AL> Download DIAL_IP from: www.limasa.com.ar/dial_ip.zip
SWH> I downloaded and tried it. It works great!
I try to discourage nobody (i worked hard on this myself) but there
are a number of issues which were overlooked and it seems i have another
story than yours to tell. I began to investigate external dialers about
seven, perhaps eight years ago and i've been using them for that long so
i'd rather not try to redefine the problem again... The graphic artwork
is nice and i could probably adopt one trick or two but i 1st had to get
the right initialization-string because the script wasn't fault-tolerant
and it started an infinite loop, then it entered one more infinite loop:
it cycled between dialup and hangup relentlessly. When i tried to cease
control of the MoDem by launching `COMTool' manually it gave me no other
choice but to exit and launch my dear old friend `{Commo} v7.7' which is
what ended the frenzy without mercy - and that confirms the preference i
had when i initially selected it as an engine with which to build my own
`PC/TCP'/`EPPPD' & `LSPPP' external ~PPP~ dialer macro/semi-auto script.
SWH> Here is a description of three modifications I have made: Instead
SWH> of loading ANSI.SYS in CONFIG.SYS... I prefer ANSI.COM over
SWH> ANSI.SYS because ANSI.COM may be loaded and unloaded...
^^^^^^^^
A valid point. I like `VMANSI.COM' because it detects other ~ANSI~
drivers and it only installs if necessary (i can't uninstall it though):
ftp://ftp.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/.subdisc3/mirrors/ [...]
[...] ftp.cdrom.com/pub/simtelnet/msdos/sysutl/
[...] vmix285.zip (238 Kb, May 3 1993)
The economy, in terms of memory consumption is unparalleled, IMO...
SWH> Also I have modified it to use LSPPP...
I did the same switch when `LSPPP v0.8' went out, `EPPPD' had began
to give me concerns and i had prepared for a reliable release of `LSPPP'
already (the year before). I could never trust any other dialer though,
that of `LSPPP' was no exception and, since the source-code is available
as well, i'm just wishing that this portion of the code will be removed!
SWH> For the IP logging I have added a line to run a TIMEDATE.EXE
SWH> program to direct its output to append to IP.LOG...
I used exactly that tool in a distant pass but that was about three
years ago, maybe more, and since i had to modify my dialer setup quite a
bit when i adapted it for `LSPPP' i'm afraid the feature was temporarily
removed and i never tried to put it back (i saw absolutely no motivation
coming from other people and i finally switched to unlimitted access)...
SWH> Alejandro, you have done some very nice work. Thanks for providing
SWH> your program for us.
I must agree even if there's place for enhancement, i only know too
well how much time it may require just to put such things in place. :-)
Oh, one last thing... I see absolutely no reason why this wouldn't
work on a LEGACY 8088 4.77 Mhz PC unless `Choice.COM' from `MS-DOS v6.x'
poses a problem. In that case, i suggest `What v1.50' as a replacement.
I don't see why it wouldn't display on a monochrome screen neither.
;-)
I hope i'm forgiven such blaunt comments, Alejandro!!! I wish you
good luck and thanks for bringing us a matter that i could relate with!
Salutations, :)
