What was the problem that caused all this frustration?

W31 is faster using DRDOS, should work well.

In the future I would recommend NOT using DriveSpace.

You didn't say what your 'budget' for this is nor what type of controller
you have.
A machine this old could have MFM, ESDI, or RLL as a controller.

If you take R.Wittig's advice and do some dumpster diving I would suggest
using the hard drive _and_ controller from a newer machine so that you can
use IDE drives. Problem there is finding an ISA controller for IDE.

For W31 anything close to 1 gig is a lot of room. 2 gig would be nice.

Ebay, dumpster diving, tell friends and relatives you will take _any_ old
computers.
If you can't use them junk them (quietly) so that others will give you
thier's. If you
complain about having to toss them other people will not give you their's.

>if I got a larger HDD installed, would i need to partition it?

For Windows I would definitely recommend a separate VM swap file partition
of at least
100 meg, preferably 128 meg. W31 will, by default, never use more than
half the available
space for a VM swap file.

> I've heard MS-DOS 6.22 needs a smaller or equal to 2 GB partition

True, and approx 8 gig maximum drive size (total).

> yet Caldera DR-DOS 7.03 is unlimited? what about Win3.11?

W31 is dependent on DOS.

Easiest way would be if you can hook up both drives and just copy from one
to the
other.

I wouldn't bother but there are utilities that would do this.

I would use a utility to fill the zipdisks but would never want to use a
zipdrive myself.
