Dear Mark,

Yes, this is a replacement in most systems. In most systems, you must
remove the 486 processor, which is usually socketed, either in a
regular socket, or in a ZIF (zero-insertion-force) socket. In a few
systems, as mentioned in Ben's message, you may find a separate socket
for the upgrade. Make sure the separate socket isn't for a math co-
processor!

You'll need to see if you can find installation instructions on the
Internet somewhere; I don't have them. As I recall, it was usually a
process of:

A) Open the case and mark the 486 processor & socket with a felt-tip,
to be sure that the processor could be returned to the socket properly
oriented.

B) Remove the 486

C) Insert the upgrade processor

D) Set jumpers on upgrade processor board (usually these are mounted on
a little circuit board) or on the motherboard, as needed. Often,
nothing needed to be done in this step.

E) Close up the case

F) Check for fire extinguisher availability - just in case

G) Turn the power on - watch it boot.

On some systems, the speed-up is significant, on some it's marginal for
the cost of the Overdrive processor at the time. Now, however, this is
a pretty good price, even if it only gives a 10% boost.

Hope this helps,
Anthony Albert
