I`m in agreement here to a point.(My opinion only,of course).
However,if you look at the rpms for redhat, most of the very up to date
stuff
is in the contrib dir.Not redhat(real)rpms at all,but rpms that users of
this
distro have uploaded to that site.
Maybe as this thread has already indicated, there are people that
understand the
rpm method, much better than most. And maybe we should all start thinking
about
learning this,so as to help everyone out.
SuSE has given us a contrib directory,i don`t know whether this is
moderated,or
not,but most times,its empty.
I know for fact that people out there are running the latest versions of
a lot
of well used software, such as windowmaker, apache, perl, the list goes on.
I think its unfair to expect any distributer,to stay on top of such a
large
cross-section of applications as are in use on any linux box.
If i knew my own rpms were good enough i`d upload em,but how to get them
tested
on a system other than my own ?.
I have now the situation here where,i have to ignore most rpm dep
messages,cause
i`ve installed from tarball, and rpm doesnt know the required stuff is
there.
This after 6 or so months is a pain,i mean can you really remember the
versions
you have of numerous libs etc.I know i can remember but a few.
Maybe if suse were prepared,or a knowledgable user could test them, and
authenticate
them as fine, the contrib dir could really be a good place to get useable
and stable
rpms.
