First as root, enter
cat somefile > /dev/lp1

If it prints, then you know you are on lp1.

Then install your printer with Yast and select lp1
for the parallel port.

You may need to go into your bios and make sure your
parallel port to enabled, and either EPP or ECP mode
enabled.

Also, in Yast, Configuration File, edit it, to start the
lpd daemon at startup. You need to do this!!!!
