I get this too using kppp and Freeserve, it also happens with Demon as well. As
I recall the kppp docs say to make sure you do not have anything in your
/etc/ppp/options file especially not "lock" as kppp handles this itself.
There is a site with infomation on how to connect to freeserve using kppp at
http://www.kppp-archive.freeserve.co.uk/
I have tried several times to get kppp to work reliably with the ISP's that I
use but so far have not succeeded, let me know how you get on.
The SuSE scripts work well for me, so for now I will stick with those.
