Your using PAP?  I use kppp with a script based login to freeserve which
is:
Expect  ogin
ID              ;sends the id in the window
Expect  word
Password        ;sends the password in the window
Expect  ystem
Pause   2       ;if you don't the pppd can die unexpectedly (if the lock wasn't
killing it.)
