|O.k., I found out that my modem won't work under Linux. Same goes for
my
|soundcard. I was warned about this in the book "Mastering LINUX".
The
|writer, Arman Danesh, says '...you are best off without a
Plug-and-Play
|modem, and should really consider spending the small amount of extra
|money required to get an external modem'. Too bad I took notice of
Linux
|after I got my new rig. My question is; is there an internal modem
that
|will work under Linux or will I have to get an external one? If I do
|need to get an external modem, is an E-Tech a good choice? Any
|suggestions? Thanks.

I'm using a Cardinal Connecta 56K 3440 wirh SuSE 6.0 and it works
fine. It's idenetical to the US Robotics Sortster, and while it as a
pnp internal modem, you can disable pnp and assign an irq vai jumpers.
I got the card to work in less than 5 minutes, and haven't had any
problems so far. But beware there's also a winmodem available from
botch Cardinal and USR, so make sure you grab the right one, and you
shouldn't have any problems.
