Thanks -- I took a look at Documentation/Changes, but the changeover
from lp1 to lp0 as the default only seemed to relate to Plug-and-Play --
at least from what I could see in a quick run-thru of this file.

Anyway, after switching to lp0, I don't get the error message (and no
print-out) -- I guess this indicates that the correct port setting is
lp1 for me.
