rob, i've had similar problems with my 4meg ati rage II+DVD. after fiddling
around for about two hours with settings and everything, i finally settled for
losing the half inch because a) i've got a 17" monitor, and it's not _that_
much of a problem, and b) using the rage card with the mach 64 driver is at
_least_ twice as fast as using the 4 meg nvidia card that came with my system
and the svga server!
i only lose the half inch when i'm running the highest resolution, anyway.
btw, i'm using the drivers that came on the the 5.3 disk set...perhaps my
problem will be cleared up if i switch to the new version of xf86.
