Here is more information I could get while working on this:

After loading the network card module SMC-Ultra with io and irq
parameters, so no probing is done, I get this in the log console:

VFS: Disk change detected on dev 02:00
VFS: Can't find a minix or minix V2 filesystem on dev 02:00
VFS: Can't find an ext2 filesystem on dev 02:00
   smc-ultra.c: v2.02 <blah>...
   eth0: SMC Ultra at 0x280 <blah>....

I don't know the nature of the VFS error but it happens when I load the
module (I tested.) At this point if I try the FTP install, it fails as I
described before. If I try a CDROM install (with a SuSE 5.3 CD in the
drive) it loads YaST with no error.

Hope this can shed some light into this problem. Any comment will be
welcome. Thanks.
