Thanks for everyone who helped me out with this topic; I wound up making
modules as per Danny Kephart's advice, and amazingly, it worked perfectly
(I'm not used to having things work out the first time around). Whoopie!

On the down side, I think it a bit ridiculous that I needed to jump through
all these hoops to make the sound chip work; there's no way I (or most
people) could have done it on my own, without the help of everyone here. Not
only is the process not intuitive, it's not even in any RTFM. There really
ought to be an easier way to do this. The next kernel, perhaps?
