Perhaps they are easier to install, but I dunno. I downloaded the Samba
2.2.x file as an RPM, and thought I'd installed it (I forget the exact RPM
command, I think the one for updating an already-installed version "-U"
maybe?) and I still have Samba 1.19.x on board.

I downloaded several RPMs of various programs from the SuSE site, to correct
"security" problems, and I'll bet none of them ever really installed
either.

But I'm not having any better luck trying to move from the 2.0.36 to 2.2.3
kernel, using tar.gz files either. I've tried twice, and all I get are a
bunch of extra files and directories, and no way to tell which is which. I
think I wound up with a complete copy of 2.2.3 installed *inside* another
copy of a 2.2.3 directory.

I followed the listing provided earlier (see 6.0 Finally arrive) by W.D.
McKinney, but after I did "ln -s /usr/src/linux-2.2.3 /usr/src/linux" and
tried "cd linux", I got a message saying unable to locate the file or
directory. Yet when I went into /usr/src/linux-2.2.3 I could clearly see
the link from linux to linux-2.2.3

I couldn't get 2.0.36 set up under SuSE 5.3 either, so I'm no worse off than
I was before. But I think that's why people are waiting for SuSE 6.1. Why
bother screwing around with something that never seems to work for you?
Want kernel 2.2.3? or 2.2.4? Get a complete installation, blow away your
old one, and re-install.

Right now I've got SuSE 5.3 with kernel 2.0.35 on one hard drive and SuSE
6.0 with kernel 2.0.36 on another, and as soon as I find something that
worked under 5.3 not working under 6.0, I go back to the other drive and see
if I can find the *.config or *.conf file or whatever, and see what it looks
like.

And since I can't seem to send output to the printer, I have to e-mail the
file to myself and pick it up on another computer.
