I remember reading something about this bug can allow any user to lock
the machine ... the workaround mentioned 'protects' the OS/users from
this happening...

I thing the other I386 based OS's have a similiar patch it's just we get
to see this in more detail as apposed to it being covered up!

All bugs are not fixed in hardware (ever).  Some not so serious bugs are
just
worked around in software.  If you read carefully you might also see
something
about "workaround enabled" in your boot messages.
