As I recall root login via telnet is defaulted as disallowed. Check in 
yast, System Administration, Security settings. Make sure that 
"Enable telnet for user root" is set to no. While you're there you 
may also wish to set security from easy to secure.
Just because they see the login prompt doesn't mean that they 
can LOGIN as root, they'll just bounce off even WITH the proper 
password if root telnet is disallowed.  :)
