For info
I just started using the 2.4.18 kernel from
ftp://ftp.uk.kernel.org:/pub/linux/kernel/v2.4/
Build was OK except gigabit ethernet failed to build.
Reboot was OK except init hung instead of reading /etc/inittab.
I rebuilt the same version on init (2.78) from src, no changes to src
and
no changes to the Makefile and it worked fine.
The rebuilt one works on the old kernel 2.4.14 too.
The sizes of the two executables are a bit confusing though:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 30632 May 26 19:08 init.new
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 502540 Oct 29 2001 init.orig

What compile option did SuSE 7.3 SPARC use to build init 15 times bigger
than it needs to be?
