I am stumped.  No matter what I do, I get an error indicating that the
system was unable to get the patches from the server.  My system seems
to connect to the server on the network and then immediately reports
that some unidentified file has not been found on the server.

Any thoughts as to how to proceed?

I use on three machines:
ftp.leo.org
/pub/comp/os/unix/linux/suse/suse

This is one of the default choices, and it works (as of five minutes
ago).

Yes.  You must actually log in as root -- at least over an ssh tunnel
su'ing 
to root does not work.
