My main apps are apache, samba, Yast2 (oink oink), gimp and > (unsuccessful) attempts at running quakeforge. IMHO a 142MHZ CPU with more Cache may be 50-80% faster than a 100/256 cpu but the limiting Factor ist not only the CPU itself. A Sparc is a cheap, stable _Server_ and not a highclocked Gamebox. This in mind you will _feel_ the Performance of Sparc, for pur Speed a P4 2,8GHz or overclocked, overheaten glowing-in-the-dark-Athlons are the better choice... > - how's the heat? I've read some usenet archives on setting up > external fans There are no Problems with the heat. There is no need to install additional Fan's if the airflow is ok (like it is described in the Sun Manual).
