Actually no, I had tried it only with vga=0 (and of course it worked all
the same). I tried it now with the framebuffer device, and it looks like
it's working... at least the machine comes back in a usable state.

X is a totally different story, though. I tried to start X, switch to
VT1 and s2ram the whole thing, but whooops... blink, blink, kernel
panic, both with vga=0 and vga=771 (my fb mode). Same thing happens if I
suspend to RAM, resume and then start X.

I'm using the version in Debian unstable, 0.2-2. I wanted to try the CVS
version, but reading the HOWTO got me a little scared about the idea of
playing with initrd since I'm not sure I know what I would be doing,
since I am using the prepackaged Debian kernel. If you knowlegdeable
folks could point me in the right direction, I would be glad to help.
