So - just to make sure that i understand you correctly - it works from
text mode with

  s2ram -f

(but the light is not turned off) but not with

  s2ram -f -a3

This is very strange on a thinkpad. You could now try "s2ram -f -r".
Did you try this from init=/bin/bash as advised on
http://en.opensuse.org/S2ram? Do you have any strange drivers loaded (fglrx)?

The T30 and the R32 (which are pretty similar to the A30) work pretty well,
this is why i am confused...
