UK: November 29, 2001 LONDON - The development of ethanol production in Mexico is likely to face major constraints due to unwillingness to diversify away from oil production as well as high production costs, a sugar industry official said this week. Speaking at a conference in London organised by the International Sugar Organization, Jose Pinto Mazal, director of sugar firm Beta San Miguel, said Mexico remained an oil producer with little motivation to produce ethanol at present. "Mexico is a very important oil exporter. Since the only producer of oil (in the country) is the Mexican government there is not yet (enough) motivation to try and promote the production of ethanol," he said. Mazal, also vice president of industry body Camara Nacional de las Industrias Azucareras y Alcoholeras, said the devlopment of an ethanol industry was also being constrained at the moment by high production costs. "The price of cane in Mexico is high for ethanol production. The country is also a net importer of corn - so I can't see Mexico having an ethanol programme soon," he added. "The only pressure that can be applied on Mexico will be environmental (to adopt ethanol production) - from an economic point of view nothing can be done at the moment," he said.
