Virtually any compatible material can be used as column packing. Broken up ceramic coffee mugs, glass, marbles, short sections of small diameter pipe (this is very similar to raschig rings), pieces of metal, like I said damn near anything. Raschig rings are simply optimal packing as they are shaped and sized to create the largest possible surface area within the column/condenser. For distilling ethanol at home you hardly need industrial/laboratory grade materials such as "real" raschig rings.
