Any time you run a conductor through a magnetic field, there will be a resistance. For example, take a copper plate and hang it from a string so it acts as a pendulum. Swing that plate through a C-shaped magnet and if the magnet is strong enough, that plate may not even be able to swing through to the other side. Remember, copper is not magnetic, so you can immediately throw that explanation out.

Passing a conductor through a magnetic field creates a current. That's how a generator works... To generate that current however, you have to give up energy (conservation of energy is the first law of thermodynamics. If it was possible to create "free energy" why do you think all those hydroelectric and steam powered turbines need so much power to run?

Oh well, I'm sure everyone knew all this anyway...
