MELBOURNE, July 26 (Reuters) - Shares in renewable energy firm Energy
Developments Australia (ASX: ENE) jumped 10.9 percent to A$3.66 on
Friday following the sale of NRG Energy's 25.5 percent stake in the
company for around A$78 million.

As part of its withdrawal from the Asia-Pacific region NRG, a
subsidiary of Xcel Energy XEL.N, sold its 14.6 million ordinary shares
for A$3.30 per share to New Zealand energy asset managers Infratil Ltd
(NZSE: IFT) and Orion New Zealand Ltd.

Energy Developments then issued 8.3 million new ordinary shares to the
two companies at A$4.13 per share, giving Infratil and Orion each a
9.99 percent stake in the renewable energy business.

NRG's 16.9 million preference shares were bought back by Energy
Developments for A$1.80 per share.

NRG announced earlier this year that it was conducting a global review
of its assets with a view to selling some in an attempt to improve
liquidity and reduce debt.

Analysts said the sale of NRG's stake in Energy Developments removed
any uncertainty surrounding the company.

"It has put some cornerstone investors into its shareholding which is
a positive step forward," an analyst, who did not want to be named,
said.

"Obviously the market sees it as a positive because the new
shareholders have done their due diligence and agree that SWERF (Solid
Waste and Energy Recycling Facility) will work."

The SWERF technology being tested by Energy Developments recovers
resources such as metals, glass and rigid plastics from the waste
stream and then treats the remaining material using gasification. This
produces syngas which is used to spark ignition engines which generate
electricity.

"It comes down to SWERF and if they can get it off the ground then we
should see a re-rating of the stock," the analyst said.
