Grand Canyon Railway's steam-powered train ride, 3/21
The city of Williams dates to 1881 and started as a gateway to the Grand
Canyon. In those days, people traveled to the Big Ditch by rail.
Although most visitors drive to the park today, the Grand Canyon Railway
still carries well over 200,000 people there each year. On March 21, the
railway is offering a special steam-powered locomotive trip to the South
Rim.

Not everyone knows how environmentally unfriendly it is to run a steam
locomotive. The steam is not the problem; using coal or wood-fired
burners to produce the steam is. That's why, in 2008, Grand Canyon
Railway stopped using steam engines for runs from Williams to the
Canyon. Now, thanks to waste vegetable oil, the steam locomotive is back
and greener than ever. See for yourself by booking a March 21 ride on
the train featuring locomotive No. 4960. The train departs at 9:30 a.m.
and returns at 5:45 p.m. If that's not a good date for you, check the
website for others.
Details: 233 N. Grand Canyon Blvd., Williams. From $65 round trip.
