I'm not certain this means the stores will close. It definitely means
that they can close them if they want to, having filed the required
notice - "Companies its size are required to give government notice 90
days in advance of layoffs."
It also likely makes it easier for them to sell the stores without the
related employment contracts. Instead of trying to transition their
workforce, this approach would let them fire everyone and have them
re-apply for jobs at whoever bought the store.
None of this is at all pleasant, but this article doesn't convince me
that these three stores will close. (And my bet is that Cornell will
find another grocery tenant for East Hill Plaza if worst comes to worst
- they have a lot invested in that corner.)
